original coursework ideas

For my course work I am planning on making a short expressionistic film focused around one central character. The main message of my film will centre around the theme of nature vs mankind and the battle between the two.

you never see the persons face (the watcher) clearly therefore making the story seem more general.

The use of the Birmingham library's roof shows the contrast between manmade and nature, could also show the fact that we have the potential to live in harmony but it was never found or balanced

Starting plot ideas

- this is a narrative sounding one character, which is nature itself,

- the film surrounds the idea of nature gaining power back over mankind in a dystopian world/ future after global warming, the there is a small amount of the population left, the large amount are gone, nature is growing back over all manmade things

- we have a photographer who remains faceless and voiceless throughout the whole film, this shows that the character of the photographer is less relevant than nature itself, the power of nature is taking over.

- We have clips of around 2 seconds of news footage talking about global warming, interrupting the calm moments in the film sometimes, the red and blue colour palate of the news will contrast the green and grey of the forests, artificial contrasted with the natural world, it will be uncertain if this is just able to be seen by us or is seen by the photographer to.

- the only noise heard throughout the whole film is the noise from the tv and radio broadcasts

- throughout the forest radios will show up, and as soon as the photographer walks away we hear static and then broadcasts start to play talking about global warming again, there will be more and more broadcasts playing, its overwhelming and shows how this is actually our future if we don’t make a change.

- the railway arches, which are overgrown, show how nature is stopping people traveling, stopping people escaped.

Initial Film Scene Plan

Title Inspiration

Let Nature Take its Course

Cast the First Stone

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better - Albert Einstein

Birmingham Library – Establishing Shot
·         Roof top shot
·         180 degree panning shot – rooftop garden to city skyline
·         Grey lighting – Daytime
·         Watcher in shot
·         Faint traffic noise, crowd and emergency sirens

News footage Flash
·         BBC (red in tone) very short.  Footage getting louder.  Overlay traffic noise.
·         Maximum of 10 secs in total
·         Intersperse with – calm nature shots (max 1 sec)
·         Heavy Rain or flooded bank/river
·         News – followed by static, fade out to birdsong

Forest / Woods
·         Still mid shot of a forest at ground level, peaceful and calming diagetic sound of birds and a stream no other noise, its undisturbed for at least 5 seconds
·         increasing sound of diagetic footsteps is heard getting louder and louder, until we see a foot walk over the camera, and continue walking, they are modern trainers.
·         We then switch to a mid shot once again capturing the persons feet walking past, but this time from a side on view
·         We focus on the camera bag swinging as they walk, it is in focus, and we can see the background too.
·          The shot now changes to see a mid shot up of the back of the watcher head, and the surrounding area, trees are tall and full the watcher stops.
·         Camera out of bag and snap of photo taking.  Shutter closing full screen, next shot is close up towards camera lens.  Static starts to build.
·         Watcher turns and continues walking, camera remains stationery and see old radio for first time where watcher was blocking.
·         Static noise slight increase.
·         Static shot from hole in tree of watching walking, occasion stop to take photo.  Where he reaches clearing, he stops and next shot from front angle.
·         Watcher lift camera, static increase, watcher lowers camera looking for sound.  Another radio can be seen in tree branches.  Track the watcher as walks towards it.  Reaches out and turns dial.  Silent for a moment. Static increases behind.  Watcher turns, point of view shot, radio in the middle of the clearing where the watcher was.  Static increase, start to hear voices of broadcast.

Watcher continues moving through forest, several radios, messages start about devastation at fall of society, message get more inspirational, ‘working with nature ’last message ‘if you are out there, please come back’.  As moving through area, watcher moves towards civilisation (bridge, human structures) but all heavily impacted by nature.  Fairy lights to slicker in trees as static continues.  Increase presences of chairs, tables, lampshades, phones, etc in the wood.

Last shot – Watcher go through tunnel.

80 minutes of  short films-

- about a girl (9 minutes 51 seconds long)= Static camera use with a low angle capturing the character dancing automatically introduces and establishes the character and sets he mood of the film. Hand held camera tracking the main character as they walk creates the idea that the audience is there with them, makes the film feel more realistic and intimate, use of beig in a somewhat natural area, the hill and trees onto a mordern concrete area which looks slightly run down shows the shift in setting (links to my films theme). the use of slow zoom out shots establishes the setting and slows the larger area. Th use of public transport shows modern living and technological advancement. Cutting between the long scene and shorter scenes to add establishment to the story and makes the film easier to understand. the static shot as the main character is walking past the camera sugguests they are on a jorney. The grey scale colour palate causes the audience to discontent in a way but also sets  the tone of realism, as well as increasing the industrial feel of the setting, watching with the conreate.

-  Connect (5 minutes long) = themes of technology shown throughout the film. The disconnect of humanity and how people ignore things that are happening around them, however if the human race was to join together more powerfully there would be a change and more things would be dealt with. People view of the world changes if they notice what is happening around them. No dialouge used throughout the film, makes the music seem more powerful, and focues the audience on whats happening instead of what they are saying. shows how humanity dont talk to eachother anymore. Use of lingering close ups on significant items focus the audience and builds the tension as wanting to know what the object is sigificant for creates a question, could also be used to establish or building onto the setting itself. The use of no dialogue shows how there is a wedge between people and commination, everyone travels alone. The use of the prop of the headphones puts a physical barrier between the person and humanity.

- Curfew (19 minutes 42 seconds)= The city setting creates the feeling of business, city light, use of the bright lights through a window shows how even when you are inside you are connected to the city. The use of the realistic sound effects such as the phone ringing makes a shocking or surreal scene seem for realistic, increasing the verisimilitude and adding to the shock factor for the audience. This could also link with the use of soft non diegetic music contradicts the intense action for the shock. old fashioned props suggests the character is out of touch. The parrell zoom shots on the two central characters faces could be adapted and used, zooming in on important objects slowly. the sharp cut of the sound into the title sequence makes the audience focus on the title. The use of the blur and lens flare using light shows how the light effects everyday life and immerses the audience into the setting. The diegetic use of sirens shows how danger is an issue in the city suggests a frantic way of living. Static shot with the main character walking past the camera not looking at it makes the audience feel invested in the story as we feel like we are observing the action itself in person forcing a emotional connection to be formed. The use of shot reverse shot causes the audience to see both sides of the reactions and what caused them. Close up of certain objects establishes setting. Use of technology to block out most of the world. muffled sound when focusing on something in particular creates contrast to the film before and shows its importance. use of forwarding facing tracking shots shows how we are following the characters journey as they are following something else. Music used to set the tone. Hand held camera used to show the unease of the situation. normal interactions happening in an industrial area. Still shot to watch the action. sereal moments, suggests the enigma of if they even happened or not, keeps the audience engaged. quick camera movement and loud city sounds creates an overwhelming atmosphere.  traveling shot using an object to block out the main character . city lights and noise are always in the background.

- elephant (36 minutes and 58 seconds)= city themed setting like my film, established link between both..silent film.

End Screen - time lapse of a plant growing through and around an object. use of a diagetic upbeat song ( potentially Annie's song)
